Real ID Is Here: Time to Get Compliant
As of May 7, 2025, the Real ID Act is officially in full effect across the United States. For folks here in Georgia, this means your driver’s license or ID card must be Real ID-compliant if you plan to board a domestic flight, enter certain federal buildings, or access military bases. The good news? Georgia is leading the nation with a 99.9% compliance rate, so most of us are already covered.
What Is a Real ID?
A Real ID is a state-issued driver’s license or identification card that meets federal security standards established by the Real ID Act of 2005. These standards were recommended by the 9/11 Commission to enhance the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents. In Georgia, any permanent license or ID issued after 2012 is already Real ID-compliant. You can verify this by looking for a gold or black star in the upper right-hand corner of your card.
What Happens If You Don’t Have One?
Starting May 7, 2025, if you show up at the airport without a Real ID or an acceptable alternative (like a valid passport), you may face delays, additional screening, or even be denied entry at TSA checkpoints. However, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has indicated that travelers without proper identification may still be allowed to fly after completing an identity verification process, though this could significantly delay airport processing.
How to Get a Real ID in Georgia
If you’re among the few who still need to upgrade, you’ll need to visit a Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) Customer Service Center in person. Be sure to bring the following original or certified documents:
Proof of Identity: Such as a certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
Proof of Social Security Number: Like a Social Security card or W-2 form.
Two Documents Proving Georgia Residency: Examples include a utility bill or bank statement dated within the past six months.
For a complete list of acceptable documents and more information, visit the Georgia DDS website.
Why a Passport Might Be Even Better
While a Real ID will get you through domestic flights and federal buildings, a U.S. passport offers broader benefits. On our last cruise, having a passport meant the difference between a 1-minute wait and a 90-minute wait to go through customs. It's a valuable tool for international travel and can expedite your re-entry into the United States.
Consider Global Entry for Frequent Travelers
For those who travel internationally often, Global Entry can be a game-changer. This program allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers to receive expedited clearance upon arrival into the United States. Benefits include:
No processing lines: Skip the long customs lines.
No paperwork: Streamlined entry process.
Access to expedited entry benefits in other countries: Facilitates smoother international travel.
Available at major U.S. airports: Convenient for frequent flyers.
Reduced wait times: Spend less time at the airport.
Additionally, Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, which expedites security screening for domestic flights. For more information and to apply, visit the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
Final Thoughts
While the Real ID deadline has been a long time coming, Georgia residents have shown remarkable preparedness. With the state achieving near-total compliance, most of us can continue our daily routines without interruption. For those still needing to make the switch, it's advisable to act promptly to avoid any travel disruptions.
